Where Did the Top PGA Players Go to College?

This ranking of the 10 universities that have produced the 10 best alumni of the PGA Tour brings together an analysis of the great players of previous years, the main championships won and the current players who are doing well. The University of Arizona also has a great champion among its golf students, Jim Furyk. He opened at Olympia Fields, near Chicago, among 16 wins to his credit on the PGA Tour. Jerry Pate is the only golfer at the University of Alabama with a major championship under his belt, but that's a side note that he might not last too long.

The Open victory in 1976 came a year after he turned professional and was one of eight PGA Tour victories. The occasional fan of professional golf is not likely to follow the university version of the sport. But like the Dukes and North Carolinas of the college basketball world, there are many college golf powerhouses that continue to produce some of the best in college golf, even if they don't necessarily graduate, to some of the best in the game. Adam Scott, Ryan Moore and Charley Hoffman form a relatively small, but certainly strong, contingent of members of the PGA Tour of the UNLV at this time. The trio has combined to win more than 20 PGA Tour events over the years, and each of them can compete in any given tournament.

Of course, Scott is the main member of that group and the only one to have won a major championship. The big left-hander, if he had played in any other era except the one dominated by Tiger Woods, would probably have been the dominant player. As has been demonstrated repeatedly over the years, stopping at the university to go from great careers for young people and fans to success on the PGA Tour is a great one good idea. More than 10 former top Georgia players consider themselves full-time Tour players, with Keith Mitchell and Kevin Kisner winning this season. Young Cameron Champ is considered by many to be the next big star of the PGA Tour after winning Sanderson Farms in October. And over the years, universities have been training very good players who have done special things at a professional level. He is dividing his time between the PGA and the Champions League, in the latter, where he has won two majors this season, including the U.

Stanford University may not have the numbers that other universities have in terms of players on the PGA Tour, but when one of those players is Tiger Woods, quality certainly trumps quantity. Rickie Fowler is the undisputed leader of this Cowboys group, not only because he wears the orange jersey at every turn, but because he has matured to become an elite PGA Tour player. The program, which gives college players and fans direct access to tour-related development leagues, had already undergone a review last fall so that the best player in the ranking would be a member of the circuit at the end of the college golf season. Lefty has returned to his hometown and won the title of PGA champion, having initially participated in the field thanks to a special invitation.
